Kali Workshop - 11.2005

The knife/dagger and empty hand elements of the Kali system

The November 2005 Kali Escrima training session, held at the Reading Academy Kwoon under the guidance of Lucas Castrounis, demonstrated empty hand, boxing and lock techniques to students for short and long range. The workshop focused on the concepts of knife counter techniques, single stick counter and attack, including ground and grappling work.

Kali training can be a great fun and the performing of multiple simultaneous activities requires the activation of both sides of the brain and every part of a practitioners body. The November session placed great emphasis on dealing with stressful situations and using fear to react faster and adapt to any threatening situation.

Photographs taken during the realities of training are displayed on below and on the right. The photographer David Drew captured the events at the November workshop during demonstrations and as students were trying to practice and understand the concept of each technique.

We appreciated the time and effort of Mr David Drew and give a big thanks to all the practitioners of the Reading Academy Kwoon who were able to attend the workshop. Great appreciation and thanks to the students who assisted me on the day and who can be seen in the photographs: Dan Creswell, Kieran Walker, Rob Chung, Alex Metaxas, Matt Dunckley, Brian Hames, Sam Bartlett and Leigh Walton.
