Wing Chun Workshop - 05.03.2007

The basic Siu Lim Tao drills of the Wing Chun system

The focus of the workshop was on the concepts of the Siu Lim Tao form and the Wing Chun system's basic drills and underlying biomechanical principles. It was an excellent opportunity for everyone (new and old) to study the foundation of the system in detail and get new information to incorporate into daily training.

The first workshop I've come to and it was a very interesting learning experience. It was nice to meet people from the other club too. Nice one Lucas, keep up the good teaching, can't wait for the summer workshop!

I enjoyed the workshop very much. My only frustration is with myself, I want to get everything right first time!

I was really pleased to work through many aspects of the Wing Chun system in one day, and I found the focus on core aspects like stance and chi sau very enlightening. Now all I have to do is get my body to do what I tell it and duplicate them!

One thing that has really stuck in my head is the concept of linking of proper punching technique to the lap sau drills. I found that to be a very useful idea, and one I hope will allow me to develop quickly.

Thanks.

Louis

I very much enjoyed the workshop, and it's starting to show that everyone else does as there were loads of people! I started to realise myself during the workshop that all the movements require muscles that still need developing but I am starting to see how the principles are working now.

I have picked this up when you were talking about Body Mechanics, and I have started thinking alot more even in everyday life about how the body moves. An example of my observation might be today on the building site taking a look at how i was moving, and the leverages, and how forces acting against my body caused me to react.

I have noticed that I have spent alot of time thinking about wing chun, and trying in my mind to figure out how I can improve, and understand. This is why I enjoyed your introductions of ideas at the seminar because it puts the right ideas in so that you can make the discovery yourself.

I think that the senior students at the school are a credit to you because they are all helpfull and a top notch bunch of people. They helped me to pull out some things now and then which kept the day exciting. See you at training.

Many thanks Lucas for checking my Wing Chun. I really enjoyed your teaching both during our private lesson and during the workshop. I already knew the Reading Academy was a special place train while I was there, but now with the quality of the hands and the spirit of the people training at the Kwoon, it has become even a better place... and I am talking not only about the old boys but also about the emerging new generation.

As for myself, what I retain from that week-end is:

  • About the Siu Lim Tao form, thanks for correcting my hands, the wrist rotation, my Gan Sao and my horse stance. I won't anymore try to keep my horse stance by all means during chi sao, as it is allow to lose it provided I recover it straight away.
  • I will also monitor the connection between my Tan Sao or Fock Sao and the hip.
  • I really appreciated the choima-choima (steps) and the rolling hand (from the wrist !!) reminder...
  • I thought I knew what straight punches were before the week-end, well... I'm glad we had that training session on Monday morning before I left: that was especially instructive ! ;)
  • I will try put into my Chi Sao that "what are you going to do about this" concept, But I can't guarrantee the result the next time we meet...

Well, if I can improve on these few issues for the next time, I think it would be great.

Cheers Lucas and See you in May.
